Lights, Camera, Action!

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to be blind? Is there a time when you have had to walk in the darkness? Perhaps there was a power outage at your house. Or maybe you had to walk down a dark street to get to where you wanted to go. Whatever the case may be, I am sure that this was a scary time in your life. As we continue our exploration of Jesus’ “I AM” statements in an attempt to understand who he is in this new year – when we have committed to grow in our faith – we now take a look at Jesus’ statement, “I am the light of the world.” And when looking at these words, I am reminded of Christmas lights. Something our family loves to do during the Christmas season is look at all the beautiful lights. There is just something about driving in the dark and all of a sudden being greeted with all these lights.

This is exactly how walking with Jesus is. In our world today, we experience many scary times. It feels like we are sometimes going through life in darkness. However, we can escape this feeling if only we allow Jesus to guide us. Jesus came to us as light in the darkness, just like the magic of Christmas lights. Light is a major theme throughout Scripture – from God’s creation of it in Genesis, to prophets like Isaiah talking about it, to the Epiphany light which we celebrate in this season, to Jesus’ charge for us to be the light of the world, to his declaration that he was sent to be our light of the world. So, as we grow in our faith, we need to remember this truth and trust Jesus to guide us. For if we do, we will no longer walk in darkness.
